Fostering greater private sector engagement in displacement settings: In conversation with the private sector to mark World Refugee Day
Join our event to mark the occasion of World Refugee Day! We are celebrating with a conversation on private sector engagement in contexts of displacement and poetry readings by refugees.

Displaced communities were among the most affected by the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, which demonstrated a need for building resilience of these vulnerable groups.

ITC with its partners have been supporting the response to such challenges with a trade-led and market-based approach. We help refugee and host communities to gain self-reliance and economic resilience by connecting them to jobs and markets, as well as by creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurship and trade.

Key to this approach is ensuring that displacement affected communities are connected to private sector actors for increased market linkages and trade. ITC’s experience has shown, however, that the challenges and risks can be significant for the private sector when operating in a disrupted market setting with a high level of uncertainty. This often manifests itself as a barrier to market entry for the private sector.

What is the business case for private sector actors to enter the market in a displacement setting? How can access be facilitated? What kind of risks are perceived by private sector actors and what are the expectations from the local communities? How is risk mitigated and managed? What is the impact of aid dependency on private sector engagement?
