From March 2016 he was the Representative of the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the United Nations and Director of the Agency’s New York Office. For two years prior to that he served as Group Executive for Corporate Services at the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) based in Pretoria.

From January 2010 to December 2013 he was South Africa's Ambassador to Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia. During this time he was also South Africa’s Permanent Representative to the UN and Other International Organisations in Vienna (IAEA, CTBTO, UNODC, UNOOSA, and UNIDO). He served as Governor for South Africa to the International Atomic Energy Agency. He was President of the IAEA's 57th General Conference in September 2013. He held other leadership positions in multilateral intergovernmental fora including: Chairperson of the PrepCom of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT); Vice Chairperson of the IAEA Board of Governors; Chairperson of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

Speaker biography: Dr. Astrid ter Wiel has substantial experience working in industry and the education sector; she works as freelancer for the Public Procurement Research Centre (PPRC). She holds a Master of Science degree (Industrial Engineering and Management, 2001) and a PhD degree (2012, Interorganizational Collaboration). She currently manages three different projects on sexual and gender based violence in Uganda, Burundi and DRC, and is strategic advisor to a Congolese NGO.

Her experience includes the development of course curricula and training materials in strategy, project management, (public) procurement and diversity in supply chains for both undergraduate and Master students as well as practitioners. Astrid is a trainer (for scientists) and qualified university lecturer, and has written about gender smart procurement. Together with Jonna van der Krift, Astrid wrote ITC's guide "Making Public Procurement Work for Women".
